A good vision? We stick to it like the apple of … our eyes! However, we tend to neglect it and not pay too much attention to it. Read on to find out how to protect your vision
1) Take your dessert
Mix a cup of blueberries with a cup of yogurt and have this dish at breakfast or as a dessert at lunch or dinner. Blueberries are among the fruits richest in antioxidants; moreover, the results of a study published in The Archives of Ophthalmology indicate that the more fruit you eat, the lower the risk of suffering from macular degeneration, an age-related disease and main cause of blindness in the elderly, .
2) Hang out with spinach
Eat this vegetable twice a week, for example in a quiche, steamed or prepared in Tuscany, i.e. sautéed in olive oil with garlic and raisins. Whatever the recipe, make sure you eat it regularly. Study results indicate that lutein, a nutrient that is particularly rich in spinach, may help prevent macular degeneration and cataracts, two age-related diseases. Ideally, you should consume this vegetable with a fatty substance (for example, olive oil), making lutein better absorbed by the body.
3) Watch out for the dry air in the car
Orient the air vents towards your feet rather than your eyes. Dry, air-conditioned air pumps moisture from the eyes like a sponge. If you cannot change the orientation of the air vents, wear sunglasses as protection. Dry eyes are not only unpleasant: in severe cases, it can lead to abrasions of the cornea and, if these are not treated, blindness.
4) Place your monitor at the correct height
When working on the computer, place your monitor so that it is just below your eye level. So, according to Dr. John Sheppard, who heads the ophthalmology residency program at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk (Virginia, USA), your eyes will close slightly when you fix it, minimizing the evaporation of the liquid that s is there and the risk of suffering from dry keratoconjunctivitis (or dry eye syndrome).
5) Eat lots of fish
Eat fish twice a week. In a study presented in 2003 at the annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, researchers from Harvard University evaluated the diet of 32,470 women and found that women who ate the least amount of fish ( and, therefore, the fewest omega-3 fatty acids were those most at risk for developing dry eye syndrome. If you don’t like fish, take fish oil supplements.
6) Be “cool”
Turn down the heat on your house. The heat dries the air, which in turn dries out the eyes. In winter, install a humidifier, or gather several plants in the room where you stand most often.
7) Hide those eyes …
Wear sunglasses every time you go out. When researchers wanted to know what relationship there was between sun exposure and the incidence of cataracts or age-related macular degeneration among fishermen in Chesapeake Bay, they discovered that the risk of suffering from these Conditions were significantly lower in those who protected their eyes from the harsh reflections of the sun and its harmful UV rays than in others. Dr. Sheppard advises wearing sunglasses even in the sun, as they also protect against the drying effects of the wind.
8) Wear a wide-brimmed hat
In addition to glasses, wear a wide-brimmed hat or cap, which will block about 50 percent of total UV rays as well as those that could enter the eye from the top or side of the glasses.
9) Treat yourself to beets
Roast beets and enjoy this vegetable, which gets its red color from anthocyanins, antioxidant phytochemicals that protect the body’s small blood vessels, including those in the eyes.
10) Take care of your eyes
Put a little essential oil of jasmine, peppermint or vanilla on your arm and smell its fragrance. According to Dr. Alan R. Hirsch, of the Chicago-based Smell and Taste Treatment Research Foundation, jasmine increases the production of beta waves in the frontal lobes of the brain, thereby improving alertness, concentration, and visual acuity. The three scents stimulate the limbic system of the brain, which in turn stimulates the eye sticks, making it easier to see when the light is dim.
